La guerra de Xartax

The War of Xartax

Xartax, an exceedingly ancient lich, is said to have been in this world since the beginning. Most likely he was here long before elves and men came to these lands. Shut away in his fortress, he devoted himself to experimenting with gems, a matter he loved more than the dwarves loved metal. At first he moved about unseen, studying men, dwarves and elves for years. To a lich that was an insignificant span in eternity, a grain of sand in the desert.

In time he came to regard them as a kind of infection or plague that challenged his standing as lord and master of these lands. That was not all that troubled him: what he wanted most was to recover the peace and solitude he had always enjoyed, and as long as those strange essences kept giving off life, he would never be at rest.

His long research into the properties of gems reached its peak when he managed to create a gem of singular beauty and power. Each gem had a cost and its making was slow: part of his own power lay in each one, and each took a hundred years to make. There were five of them, useless alone but together able to unleash disasters and plagues. Not instantly: after every use he had to wait a year for their power to recharge. The gems had another quality: they let him take on a physical form, which he had lost when he spent his power making them. They stood for the elements of the world: earth, air, water, wind and fire.

Confident now in his power, his first experiment was the destruction of the elven forest and the city of Midkedmia, which no longer exists. A human town followed, then a dwarven one, and so on until he had destroyed them all.

Men, elves and dwarves called a council, for the threat was great for all of them. They decided that the only way was to defeat Xartax in his own domain, the valley known today as the Valley of Xartax. The most numerous people were the men, and kings and princes marched to war from among them; every human hero of that age stood in their ranks: Andalar, the paladin; Alman, king of Esperanza; Ventick, Esperanza's master-at-arms, whose three daughters were destined to hold the highest posts in the city's military; and the paladin Selene, newly knighted by the king. All of them were heroic figures, loved by the people not only for their valor but for their humility and ease of approach. No one could say it was impossible to ask them a favor or to speak to them as equals. So great was the people's affection, above all for the paladins, that the people themselves begged them to stay in the city and not march to war.

For the dwarves marched King Lrabck Swifthammer, with his sons Grock Goldbeard and Fen Silverbeard, together with an army armed with mithril mail and shields forged by the finest dwarven artisans, who were the Swifthammers themselves.

For the elves marched Fenafao Fevlivrin, general of the elven troops, together with the Moreheld rangers and the elven scouts, who joined the battle: the best archers in the realm. The elven queen, Aglarana, would remain with the reserves and, if need be, take the field only as a last resort.

So they all gathered and marched to the Valley of Xartax.

La batalla del Valle de Xartax

The Battle of the Valley of Xartax

Such a movement of troops would go unnoticed by no one, but Xartax had the finest army one could ask for: the dead. They do not complain, they feel no fear, they never retreat…

The orc tribes of the south joined Xartax in exchange for the plunder of the elven, dwarven and human cities. All the troops took their positions: elves, men and the undead. The rotten stench of the undead army made some warriors retch. The army of men, the largest, would try to break the central block of the undead lines, while the dwarves and the elves struck the flanks. Xartax himself stood in the ranks of the undead, armed with a shield and a sword. He called his sword Gruith, which in the elven tongue means “fury.”

The battle began with a rain of elven arrows on the dead. It had no effect, except that now it was an army studded with arrows. The paladins of Esperanza drew their swords all at once and charged, and the king of Esperanza rode with them. “Hard is the fight against an enemy that feels no pain, fear or pity,” the king cried. At the heart of the battle, cutting through the enemy ranks toward Xartax, went Andalar, Selene and the Swifthammer brothers. They hewed arms, heads and whatever stood in their path, in a jungle of undead and pestilence.

The king of Esperanza, together with the master-at-arms and the king of the dwarves, fought back to back. An army of orcs had arrived as reinforcements and outflanked the dwarven army, so the king went to their aid with his friend. The orcs, though many, fell one after another into a tangled heap before the king's sword and the dwarf's hammer. Both weapons were legendary in their day. The king's sword was called “Orckisser,” because what the king hated most was these creatures, and it was forged by Lrabck himself in the volcano of Khal Tax. Lrabck had a hammer that shone, called “Dawnlight.”

A tragic end awaited the three: they died pierced by thousands of goblin arrows, which came as a surprise along with more of Xartax's orc troops. That is how those weapons were lost, plundered by the orcs and goblins during the battle.

Half of the elves withdrew, leaving the few men and dwarves still fighting, for the queen had sent a messenger begging for help: a battalion of orcs and a black dragon were laying waste to the elven city.

It was then that the courage of men decided the course of the battle. The paladins of Esperanza, now few in number, stood at the center of the skirmishes with the Swifthammer brothers. Xartax, bored by the monotony of the fight, began to advance toward where the brothers stood. The battle froze and everyone watched Xartax come toward them. Silverbeard hurled a hammer at him, and it bounced off Xartax's shield. Xartax seized the nearest dwarf, Goldbeard, who stood paralyzed: it was the first time he had seen anything so horrible up close. Xartax took his chance and ran his sword through Goldbeard's mithril mail.

“Noooooo!” cried Silverbeard, leaping at Xartax, who cast disintegrate on the dwarf and left him reduced to dust.

The only human heroes still standing were Selene and Andalar. Seeing this, Selene ran at Xartax and struck his shield. Xartax defended himself well: he had had an eternity to practice swordplay, while his opponent had more courage than technique. Selene knew she could not win. The only way to defeat him was to break his crown, in which Xartax's tears were set. So she threw herself upon him like a raging bull, and Xartax answered with his steel, piercing the plate over Selene's stomach. Astonished at such a show of daring, or of folly, Xartax stood staring at the woman, who still lived, run through from side to side by the sword. As he tried to pull it free, she gripped his arms firmly, a smile on her face. Xartax realized then what the woman had done. He looked to one side, and the last thing he saw was Andalar striking him on the head, a blow that broke his crown…

Los herederos

The heirs

Xartax fell, but he did not wholly go. The five gems survived the Valley, and those who fought there left behind more than legends: they left heirs. Today their descendants walk the world, each carrying the weight of a name.

Maren Andalar, a young paladin of the temple of Caer Manann, is the great-granddaughter of Andalar, who broke the crown. She has heard the story of the Valley all her life and fears she cannot live up to her surname. She honors the memory of Selene, the paladin who died holding Xartax so that Andalar could strike.

Brenna Ventick, a veteran officer of Esperanza, descends from the line of the master-at-arms Ventick, who died beside King Alman. She grew up with the story of “Orckisser,” the king's sword that the orcs and goblins looted from the battlefield, and swore to bring it home before she dies.

Dorin Silverbeard, a dwarven priest of Moradin, is of the line of Fen Silverbeard. His family keeps a vial of grey dust they say is Fen's, and the hammer “Dawnlight,” lost in the Valley, is the one thing his people never stopped looking for.

Lirael Fevlivrin, an elven ranger of Moreheld, is of the line of General Fenafao, who pulled half the elven host from the Valley to save their city. Her people never agreed on whether he was right to leave men and dwarves to die, and she has carried that question, and the loss of Midkedmia, all her life.

And one does not descend from heroes: Merrick Vael, an apprentice gem-cutter in Xartax's fortress. He helped cut and set the stones without knowing what they were for, and fled when he understood. Now he hides, unsure whether his help is atonement or just another way of serving the lich.
